Cosmetic Brow Tattooing

If you are considering getting any form of cosmetic brow tattooing, please read this page before booking an appointment!

Feather Touch Brows

Feather Touch Brows, also known as 'microblading', is a form of semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing. Small, delicate hairstrokes are carefully and artistically drawn onto the skin using fine needles on a manual hand tool. The goal is to make these hairstrokes look as natural as possible, in order to blend the cosmetic tattoo in with the clients existing hair! This treatment is also extremely suitable for those who also have no brow hair, as the cosmetic tattoo will give the appearance of having realistic eyebrows. The brow shape and colour is carefully chosen in order to highlight and emphasise the client’s facial structure, giving a much more youthful appearance. It saves clients time each day applying makeup and is ideal for those leading an active lifestyle using the gym or swimming at the beach.

Ombré & Combination Brows

Ombré and Combination Brows is a more solid style compared to Feathering. If you prefer a more defined and filled in look then these two styles would be the best ones for you!

Ombré Brows is shading throughout the brow and is artistically tailored carefully for each individual client. It can be done in a lighter and powdery style, or dark and defined.

Combination Brows brings together the shading technique of Ombré Brows and the Feather Touch hair strokes, to create a more natural-looking bold brow.

Ombré and Combination Brows are done using a cosmetic tattoo machine. This tends to last longer and not require as regular touch-ups in comparison to Feather Touch Brows.

Nano Brows

Hair strokes are tattooed onto the skin with a machine, using a ‘nano’ (thin) needle. This is a very similar style to Feather Touch Brows with the natural fluffy hair strokes, however, these machine strokes last much longer & heal to a nicer quality over an extended period of time. It is ideal for oily, combination & mature skin types as it causes less trauma/damage to the skin.

Nano Brows can be done in two styles: hair stroke only or combination. The hair stroke only style is very similar to Feather Touch Brows (microblading), with the fluffy natural hair strokes. It is perfect for those who like that natural look, or want to emphasise their already natural brows by filling them in with more tattooed “hair”. The combination style is similar to Combination Brows, with the hair strokes at the front and shading throughout the rest of the brow. The only main difference is that these hair strokes are done with the nano needle, and not with the microblade (which is what is used in Feather Touch Brows).

What is the process?

Cosmetic eyebrow tattooing involves a full consultation, tattoo & 1-month touch-up visit. This is a two-part process, with an additional touch-up tattoo being required after a month to fill in and perfect any areas where the pigment may have faded. This touch-up is included within the price. It must be completed within 6-weeks post initial treatment, otherwise, additional charges will apply.

Prior to the procedure, a pre-numb anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to assist with the numbing of the area. Throughout the process, gel anaesthetic is also applied to reduce any irritation and inflammation that may occur.

Depending on how you follow the aftercare recommendations, along with your skin type and lifestyle choices, the tattoo will last between 12-36 months.

It is recommended that you maintain your eyebrow tattoo with yearly touch-ups. Please remember that a cosmetic brow tattoo will still require waxing/ plucking maintenance. If you have blonde hair and have them tattooed darker than your natural brow hair colour, you will also need to continue getting them tinted or hennaed.

Does it hurt?

A topical numbing cream is used before and during the process in order to reduce irritation and swelling. People's pain tolerances are all different, so please keep this in mind!

What do I need to know PRIOR to my appointment?

This information is provided to ensure that there is minimal bleeding during the tattooing procedure. Failure to follow the below instructions can result in poor healed results.

  • It is advised that you don't wax, thread or pluck your eyebrows for at least ONE week before your appointment.

  • Do not consume any caffeine or alcohol the day of your appointment. This includes coffee, energy drinks, pre-work out, coca cola and tea. Do not take fish oils & vitamin E oils for a week before your treatment. Caffeine, alcohol & fish oils act as a blood thinner, causing you to potentially bleed during the process. This will stop the cosmetic tattoo pigment from holding in the skin.

  • Blood thinning medication should be discussed with a doctor prior to your appointment. It will need to be stopped 1 day prior to your appointment, as you will bleed more during the tattoo process!

  • You won't be able to heavily exercise (cause the face to sweat), use a sauna, swim or tan for ONE week.

  • You can bring in reference pictures of eyebrows.

  • Facials & skin peels should be avoided for one week before tattooing.

  • Botox should be done 1 month before or 2 weeks after your brow tattoo appointment.

  • Using a high Vitamin A, Retin-A or Tretinoin, this will need to be discontinued at least 2 weeks prior to your appointment.

What is the aftercare?

  • Following the aftercare instructions is extremely important in order to ensure good retention of colour during the healing process. Aftercare accounts for over 60% of the healed results.

  • Apply any medicated cream or healing balm as recommended by your technician. Aftercare cream can be purchased at your appointment for $30.

  • Avoid getting the area wet for up to 10 days, which includes keeping your face dry during a shower. Use a damp face cloth or face wipe to clean your face.

  • Use a damp cotton pad to gently wipe the area for the first two days. This will reduce the build up of lymph fluid as the brows heal and reduce the chances of scabbing.

  • Don’t put makeup on your brows or forehead for at least 10 days. This is because the tattoo is a healing & open wound. Applying makeup to the brows will increase the chance of infection.

  • Don’t pick at scabs, tug, or itch the eyebrow area. Again, this will increase the chance of infection and possibly cause skin damage and scarring.

  • Avoid saunas, swimming, and excessive sweating until the area is completely healed, which may take up to two weeks.

  • Keep your hair away from your brows. Do not touch your brows with bare hands when they have been freshly done. Simple hygiene!

  • Long Term Aftercare: Apply SPF-50 daily to the healed brow. Sun exposure over a prolonged period of time will fade the tattoo. Do not use strong chemical acids/ peels (salicylic, glycolic, lactic acids),IPL or laser on the healed cosmetic tattoo, as these will fade the tattoo over time.

What to expect while the brows are healing?

Your brows will appear a lot darker and more intense than what they will look like once healed. Over the first few days, they will be at their darkest. They might scab and flake, this is completely normal. While they heal, this will fade to reveal a much lighter colour. Please keep in mind that everyone’s skin will heal differently! The true colour of the tattoo will not be revealed until after 4 weeks. The touch up is then completed at 4-6 weeks to perfect any areas that need some extra attention.

Hypopigmentation in darker skin tones

Hypopigmentation refers to patches of skin that are lighter than your overall skin tone. Your skin's pigmentation, or colour, is based on the production of a substance called melanin. If your skin cells don't produce enough melanin, the skin can lighten. This may happen to clients in the Fitzpatrick Scale 4, 5 & 6.

While the brows are healing, they may experience hypopigmentation, where the skin healing under the tattoo turns a lighter colour (white, grey or a milky colour), before changing back to the normal skin tone. The tattoo colour may completely disappear during this time too, and will resurface once the brows have fully healed in 6-8 weeks.

Please trust the healing process. This does not happen to all darker skin-toned clients, but it can happen!

Who is NOT eligible for this treatment?

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are unable to get this treatment.

  • Diabetics should seek a doctor’s recommendation beforehand. This is because the healing will take longer, with a higher risk of infection possible.

  • Those on blood-thinning medication should not receive this treatment. This includes aspirin, treatment of high blood pressure, pain relief (Ibuprofen), Niacin, Vitamin E, Advil. Please receive advice from your doctor before discontinuing any medication.

  • If you suffer from acne, open wounds on the face, or other infections on the brows, it is strongly advised to not get this treatment done. This is because the chance of spreading the infection is higher in these clients.

  • Those with oily skin are also advised that their Feather Touch Brows may not last as long as other clients, due to the nature of their skin rejecting the pigment. This would mean that more regular touch-ups would be required. Alternatively, Ombré or Combination Brows has better healed results for oily skin types.

  • If you suffer from keloid scarring, it is strongly recommended that you don't receive Feather Touch Brows. There is the possibility of doing a test patch during a consultation in order to assess your healing if this applies to you. Alternatively, Ombré Brows can be done as this cosmetic tattoo is less damaging to the skin and has a quicker healing time.

  • If you have taken Accutane in the past year you are unable to get this treatment.

  • Those who are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, benzocaine, tetracaine or epinephrine will need a doctor’s note. You will need to supply your own numbing cream.

  • Anyone who has any serious medical conditions will require a doctor’s note.
